Twenty-three Bedford County juniors just finished their first year toward associate degrees as part of a new program. The course: public speaking. The assignment: impromptu speeches. Cody Reynolds' topic: The influence of penguins in his life. In less than three minutes the 17-year-old crafted a jocular speech about flightless birds in "sweet tuxedos."

VDOT money to promote students walking and biking to school (WSLS Newschannel 10 Roanoke)

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has awarded more than $1 million in Safe Routes to School funding to 13 school systems, local governments and not-for-profit groups across the commonwealth to make bicycling and walking to school safer and more appealing to students.
